 Riders FORUM

At each of our FEI Rides in 2011, we will be conducting a Riders Forum. These forums will be positive, motivational and provide Riders with the opportunity to debate workable ideas for the International section of our Sport. Some Riders will bring ideas, some will listen to ideas. We will ensure that these forums are positive and constructive providing real chances for ideas to be considered and Riders to become more involved.

Ø Agenda/initatives at Riders discretion.

Ø Rider communication.

Ø Stronger voice for riders.

Ø Support AES and NESC initiatives.

Ø Working together

Ø Establishing protocols to deal with problems

Ø Future Guest Presenters?

Date Claimer: The first Forum - Saturday the 19th February at 10.00 am. (Between the 1 and 2** Rides at Fernvale)

enquiries from Early October to: toftendurance@bigpond.com

Our first ride for Fernvale 2010 proved challenging for competitors, officials and the OC.  We would like to sincerely thank everyone who supported this event as a competitor or official in both the AERA and the FEI rides and those who assisted Oz Endurance to ensure that the event was a success.

Penny and I found this event very challenging as Ride Organisers due to the extreme weather conditions, the new ride base and this being the first event for 2010..  We would like to make special mention of the following

Brian Sheahan, Amanda Parry, Jim Baldwin, Richard Toft, Kathy Webb, Celia Dodd, Jo Hamilton-Branigan, Dee Berry, Deb Watson, Denise Kay, Bill Miller, Lyndall Abercrombe, Jane Huff, Barb Timms, Glenda Armitage, Derek Armitage, Dick Collyer. Mark Grogan, Kaylea Grogan, Toby and Sue Crockett, Caroline Windle, Tanya and Roman Stoffel, the Toft Team, Lee Edwards, John Walker, Jan Tyrrell, Paul and Caroline Fitzgerald, Ken Burwell, Lex and Michelle McCoombes, Helen and Warwick Toft, David Toft,  Jenny Edwards, Jill Moss, Wendy Smith, Lisa Sanchez, Hal Archer, Bianca Bush and the many not mentioned individually.

From the above list it is easy to understand that this event would not have been possible without their support.  There were some very entertaining moments at the ride and I was in a very fortunate position throughout the weekend to witness the quality of horses and horsemanship displayed particularly on the Friday night.

The next event scheduled for Fernvale is on the 6th and 7th March to be conducted by Fernvale Endurance Riders Club.

Results from the weekend are available from Endurance db.  Look forward to seeing you all in March.

New Equestrian Australia Containment Rules for horses at FEI Events

Clarification

Oz Endurance acknowledges and endorses Equestrian Australia's proactive stance on the containment of horses at FEI

events to support the safety of all of the horses and competitors.

For competitors wishing to compete at our forth coming event on the 6/7 February, no changes to the existing

procedures of containment are going to be enforced meaning that a 2 strand electric yard fully operational

will be accepted. As usual at FEI events, officials will be inspecting the containment measures

implemented by competitors.

OZ Endurance does recommend the use of steel yards and asks all competitors to be diligent with their containment

procedures.

So in summary, same old same old, just be diligent with regard to the containment of your horses.

OZ ENDURANCE RIDE WRAP UP

Well, the last ride for the season is over and what a great weekend we all had.

The weather was good to us and everybody enjoyed the night riding. I think the only drawback was

the long hours that took their toll by Sunday morning.

The intro ride was very successfull with a total of 39 starters. Thanks to Erin Krahnen for taking on the job of pace Rider. The Saturday morning was hot and humid which made the going slow. We had 36 completions and 3 withdrawals. A great time had by all, with the field consisting of a large number of Pony Club Riders and individuals doing their first Endurance Event.

Oz Endurance would like to thank very  much, the wonderful group of volunteers that assisted over the weekend.  Our Fernvale committee club members, Paul, Caroline, Tim and Jess Fitzgerald, Toby and Sue Crockett, Jan Tyrrell, Kate Gadsby, Deb Watson, Lee Edwards, Helen and Georgia Toft, thank you for your magnificent support to the weekend.

Dee and Vern Berry, Noel Weismann, Matthew Krahnen, David Sommerville, Jill Moss, Jill Hawks, Ben Caslick, Stacey Nottle, Ted  and Linda Meredith, Gail Holmes, Yohann and Gillian Willemse.

Les and Michelle McCoombes were wonderful gate sitters and were very diligent with their jobs.

Thank you to Dixon Smith for their sponsorship of a Zilco breastplate.

Thanks to Sonya Ryan who helped with the intro ride and provided lollies, bandanas and drinks. (Much appreciated by all)

Thanks also to our own Morgan and Pierre as well as Bridgett and Maxine.

Thanks to our Chief Stewards, Barb Timms and Melisssa Longhurst who soldiered on tirelessly. Also thanks to our Team of Vets, Celia Dodd, John Glazebrook, Peter Keerkenzov, Kathy Webb and Richard Toft.

The Lowood Lions Club did a great job with the catering.

Thank you to those who left their camping areas tidy.

A great weekend of riding and a friendly happy atmosphere.

We look forward to hosting further Events along with our Sister Club FERC. In 2010.

                                                                                   INTRO RIDE INFORMATION

20km INTRO RIDE 14th November 2009

OZ ENDURANCE (Q) inc 20km Introductory Ride

COME AND EXPERIENCE ENDURANCE

NOMINATIONS

No pre nomination forms are required to be completed.  We prefer your Club/Organisation to advise us (contact below) of the number of participants competing in the 20km Introductory Ride or reply directly to the Ride Secretary. Individuals can nominate directly to the Ride Secretary.

ON ARRIVAL

You will be directed with signage to a dedicated area for the 20km competitors.

For those arriving on Friday evening, camping facilities are available. You will need to bring a secure yard.

For those arriving early on Saturday morning, after unloading your horse/s you should proceed to the registration office (without horses).

You will be required to complete an Entry form which does require a responsible Person to sign.

You will be given a Ride Bib displaying your rider number and a Day Card if your horse is not registered with our Endurance Association. (Endurance registered horses will have a Logbook).

You will also be given an information package and  Ride Fact Sheet.

Your Day Card will record the Vet assessment of your horse.

We will have additional experienced endurance personnel to assist with your nomination and to answer any questions.

After nomination, your horse is to be vet checked to ensure it is fit to start.

This is the first of two inspections.  The second inspection will be within 30 minutes of your horse completing the 20km course.

At both inspections experienced and friendly endurance personnel are available to give advice.

At the initial inspection, your horse will have a number of assessments including having a rectal temperature taken.  Please practice this beforehand as it is important for the horse to be relaxed with this procedure.  This is very important.

Another important assessment is gait.  Your horse must be able to trot freely on a loose lead in front of the examining vet around a triangular course.  Please practice.

Whilst the above inspection might sound different and scary, it is not and you should identify to a steward if this is your first visit to an endurance ride.  We are here to support and encourage and that means help you and your horse feel comfortable with these procedures.

After the Pre ride vetting, an educational  Ride briefing will be conducted.  All information will have been provided in a Fact Sheet however, the briefing allows us to reconfirm important points and for you to ask questions.

MUST DO/HAVE

43.2 All Riders must wear an Equestrian standard helmet that complies with the Equestrian standard of Australia, the USA, or Europe current at the time of manufacture. PCAQ approved helmets are good.

Appropriate riding attire.

A healthy and sound Horse.

PREFER

Shod horses or alternatively recently well trimmed hooves.

VIEWING

Parents and friends can proceed to the river crossing (Marked River) to watch riders traverse the Brisbane River.  No Vehicles are to move whilst the horses are in proximity to the river crossing.  Please note that vehicles and horses are on different tracks. (Great photo opportunities).

THE RIDE START

You will assemble approximately 15 minutes before the start time, in the marshalling area, to have your Ride number confirmed with the Chief steward as starting in the event. A gear safety check will be performed prior to start on all participants. If numbers determine, we will have a split start time to avoid overcrowding.

There will be a pace rider (clearly identified) that you are not allowed to pass.  There will also be a sweep rider who will remain last on the course to keep pace with the slower riders.

You will follow black arrow. Other coloured arrows are for the other endurance events over the weekend and should be disregarded by you.

You will encounter an “X” which means DO NOT go that way, “C” means caution.

You must abide by the road rules.

THE COURSE

The ride course includes two river crossings and one hill.  The river crossing is approximately 60cm deep.  If you are uncomfortable crossing the river there is a bridge as an alternative.  This crossing is a great photo opportunity for your family.

There will be 5km distance markers and water for your Horse every 5km.

AT THE FINISH

When you arrive back at the finish line, you will be given a time slip and your Day Card which will  display the time you arrived back and the time you must present yourself and horse to the vet for your second and final inspection.

You must present within 30 minutes of finishing and your horse’s heart rate must be below 55 beats per minute when presenting to the vet.  Your must bring your Day Card with you when you present to the vet for your final inspection. Stethescopes or heart rate monitors can be loaned to those who may not have them.

During the period from arrival to final vet inspection, your horse should be given the opportunity to drink and snack.  You will need to cool down your horse with water and keep it happy to ensure that your Horse relaxes. (Horses may vet with mates).

When you present for your final inspection, a Steward (TPR) will take your horse’s heart rate and then you will proceed to the VET.

Sonya Ryan's Tips

  • Use a halter when taking your horse to vetting ie makes it more comfortable for the horse when running out.
  • When you come across the line, dismount and either have your strapper take the saddle or if no strapper loosen the girth and walk back to your camp.
  • At a water check points let your horse drink as much as it would like (debunk the myth about it may give them colic)
  • Make sure you check your horses hooves for rocks etc before vetting

DEDICATED AREA

There will be a dedicated strapping area specifically for those who have not experienced endurance before, with friendly endurance people to help you strap (cool down) your horse.

1.       To help anyone unfamiliar with procedures.

2.       To help with any horse’s elevated heart rates.

3.       To ensure you are ready to present for your final vet inspection on time.

NAUGHTY HORSES

We will also have a special area and an experienced steward to help with any horses who may be unsettled and presenting some difficulty for the rider.

REMEMBER

You are competing for a COMPLETION.  No individual placing is awarded.  You will be determined to have completed when your horse passes the final vet inspection.  This is a non-competitive event.

POST RIDE

At approximately 12.00noon subject to the last completions, a presentation will be held.  Please return your Ride Bib at this presentation and you will collect your Vet card.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

START TIME

Scheduled to allow people to arrive in the morning, complete the necessary pre ride entry and vetting and to complete the ride before the hottest part of the day.

HOW FAST DO I GO? Walk, trot or canter?

The minimum time to complete the course is 2 hours 30 minutes at an average speed of 8 klms per hour.  This means that you should go at a steady pace.  Most horses walk at 6klm per hour, so suggest you walk up and down the hill, with some trotting and cantering on the flat ground. A maximum riding time of 4 hours is set for those wanting to walk most of the trail.

RIVER CROSSING

If your horse does not like going through water (suggest you follow another horse first) or use the bridge.

WHEN DO I OFFER WATER TO THE HORSE?

As frequently as possible. Some Horses may be nervous early and choose not to drink.

RULES

AERA indroductory ride guidelines available from members hand book, revised January 2008 apply to this Event.

OZ ENDURANCE: Event specific rule no Stallions allowed.

The secret to success for endurance riding is to look after your horse.  Let it drink freely and snack allow the trail if he/she desires.  (This is extremely important for longer distances).

We want your first endurance experience to be enjoyable and a little bit educational.  Hopefully you will leave with a better understanding of our sport and also a better understanding and appreciation of your horse.

Endurance is about passion, the challenge and the comradery of spending hours out in the Australian bush with friends and your Horse. The invitation to PCAQ/QISEA is to come and share the trail and experience endurance.

  • Endurance makes you learn about your horse and appreciate their true greatness.
